Seven NCHC Players Named to 2023-2024 CCM/AHCA All-America Teams

Four NCHC skaters selected to First Team, three tabbed to Second Team

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – For the fourth time in NCHC history, seven National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) players have been selected CCM/AHCA Division I All-Americans, as the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) revealed the All-America teams Friday night as part of the Hobey Baker Award ceremony at the RiverCentre.

Four NCHC players were named to the First-Team West All-America Team, while a trio of NCHC skaters were tabbed to the Second Team. North Dakota sophomore forward Jackson Blake, Denver junior forward Jack Devine, DU freshman defenseman Zeev Buium and Colorado College sophomore goaltender Kaidan Mbereko all garnered First-Team honors. Denver junior forward Massimo Rizzo, CC sophomore forward Noah Laba and St. Cloud State grad student defenseman Dylan Anhorn landed on the Second Team.

The entire All-NCHC First Team earned All-America honors, along with Rizzo, who was a Second-Team All-NCHC selection this season. Rizzo is the lone repeat All-American from the NCHC and one of only three repeat All-Americans this season, including the only West All-American. Denver’s three All-Americans tied with Michigan for the second-most from one school in 2023-24, while DU’s opponent in the National Championship Game Saturday night, Boston College, led the way with five.

The NCHC last had seven AHCA All-Americans in 2019-20, while the Conference also had seven in 2016-17 and 2015-16. This is also the fourth year the NCHC has been home to four First-Team All-Americans, last happening in 2019-20, along with 2017-18 and 2016-17. The seven All-Americans from the NCHC trailed only Hockey East (8) among conferences, with the Big Ten third with five.

Blake (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was named the NCHC Player and Forward of the Year this season after tying the NCHC single-season scoring record with 60 points. The 60 points (22g/38a) tie for fourth nationally and are tops in the NCHC, while his 38 assists tie for third in the NCAA. Blake, who signed an NHL contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday, also broke the NCHC single-season conference scoring record with 37 points in 24 NCHC games. The sophomore was a Hobey Hat Trick finalist this year, as well, and a two-time NCHC Player of the Month.

Devine (Glencoe, Ill.) was a finalist for NCHC Player of the Year and a 2024 Hobey Baker Award Top-10 finalist. The Florida Panthers draft pick has tallied 56 points (27g/29a) in 43 games this season to rank seventh nationally, while his 27 goals are fourth in the country and first in the NCHC. Devine recorded nine multi-goal games this season, while averaging 1.30 points per game.

Buium (San Diego, Calif.) was also named NCHC Rookie of the Year and Offensive Defenseman of the Year this season, as well as First-Team All-College Hockey News. The freshman phenom has 49 points (11g/38a) in 41 games this season, tying for first nationally in defenseman scoring and tying for 10th among all skaters. His 38 assists tie for third in the NCAA among all players, while his 11 goals are third among all blueliners. Buium, a projected top-10 pick in the upcoming NHL Draft, was a two-time NCHC Rookie of the Month this year and was the HCA Co-National Player of the Month in November.

Mbereko (Aspen, Colo.) was the unanimous NCHC Goaltender of the Year and a top-3 finalist for the Mike Richter Award. He was also NCHC Goaltender of the Month three straight months this season (December-February), including HCA National Goaltender of the Month for February. Mbereko backstopped CC to its best-ever finish in the NCHC, posting a 21-13-3 record in net, while starting all 37 games for the Tigers. He leads the NCHC with both a .915 save percentage and a 2.40 goals-against average on the year.

Rizzo (Burnaby, B.C.) repeats as an All-American after averaging 1.52 points per game this season, which ranks fifth nationally. The Philadelphia Flyers prospect started the year strong, tallying 44 points in his first 28 games before an injury sidelined him in late February. Rizzo returned to the lineup Thursday at the Frozen Four, while his 34 assists still tie for eighth in the country. He also has 10 goals in 29 games on the year, tallying at least a point in 22 of those games. Rizzo was the NCHC and HCA National October Player of the Month this season, as well.

Laba (Northville, Mich.) earned NCHC Defensive Forward of the Year honors and the NCHC’s Three Stars Award this season. The New York Rangers draft pick won the NCHC goal-scoring title with 16 goals in conference play, while his 20 goals overall tie for 17th in the country. Laba tallied 37 points (20g/17a) in 36 games on the year, while his seven game-winning goals rank fourth in the NCAA and his three short-handed goals tie for third nationally. He was also the NCHC Player of the Month in January.

Anhorn (Calgary, Alta.) tallied a career-high 33 points (6g/27a) in 38 games this season, ranking third in scoring among NCHC defensemen and 11th nationally among rearguards. His 27 assists tied for eighth among NCAA blueliners. The SCSU captain tallied two game-winning goals on the year and was a finalist for NCHC Offensive Defenseman of the Year. Anhorn, who signed with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose last week, posted a +14 plus/minus this season and was twice named NCHC Defenseman of the Week during the year.
