Pair of NCHC Student-Athletes Named to 2022-23 CSC Academic All-America Team

WMU’s Aidan Fulp, UMD’s Tanner Laderoute among only 47 on NCAA Division I Men’s At-Large Team

AUSTIN, Texas – Two National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) student-athletes have been named to the 2022-23 Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Team, selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC) and announced by CSC on Wednesday. Western Michigan junior defenseman Aidan Fulp was voted to the Second Team, while Minnesota Duluth graduate student forward Tanner Laderoute was tabbed to the Third Team.

Fulp and Laderoute are among only 47 NCAA Division I student-athletes named Academic All-America on the Men’s At-Large Team, which includes male athletes from all NCAA sports except baseball, basketball, football, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, and track & field/cross country (each of those sports has their own Academic All-America Teams).

The 2022-23 season marks only the third time the NCHC has had multiple Academic All-Americans in the same year, with the others coming in the NCHC’s first two seasons (2013-14 and 2014-15). Fulp and Laderoute become the seventh and eighth NCHC student-athletes ever to be selected to the CSC Academic All-America Team and the first since former St. Cloud State defenseman and current SCSU director of operations Clark Kuster in 2019-20.

47388Fulp (Westfield, Ind.) maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average during his three seasons with the Broncos, while majoring in exercise science. The WMU assistant captain is a three-time NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and has twice won Western Michigan’s team scholar-athlete award. On the ice, Fulp totaled 15 points, including two goals and 13 assists, this past season to help WMU to a runner-up finish in the NCHC. He was also a finalist for NCHC Defensive Defenseman of the Year. Fulp finished his college career with 38 points (4g/34a) in 97 games with the Broncos, making two NCAA Tournament appearances, before turning pro this spring. He signed a two-way entry-level contract with the New York Islanders that starts in 2023-24.

47389Laderoute (Edmonton, Alta.) earned his undergraduate degree in finance with a 3.96 GPA in the spring of 2022 from UMD, then posted a 3.94 GPA this year while working towards his master’s degree in business administration. He is a five-time NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and five-time member of the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team. Laderoute served as the Bulldogs team captain in 2022-23 and an assistant captain as a senior in 2021-22. He tallied seven points in 37 games as a grad student this past season and finished his five-year UMD career with 58 points, including 30 goals and 28 assists, in 172 career games. Laderoute won an NCAA National Championship as a freshman in 2019 and a pair of NCHC Frozen Faceoff titles during his time as a Bulldog. He signed with the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers at the conclusion of the 2022-23 college season.

To be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games this season, have completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and been on a college roster in that sport for two years. In the cases of transfers, graduate students, and two-year college graduates, the student-athlete must have completed one full calendar year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
