Denver’s Stapley, Chrona and Devine, along with SCSU’s Perbix honored for Week 10

Previous Bauer NCHC Players of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For only the second time this season, one team claimed three Bauer National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Player of the Week awards, as a trio of Denver Pioneers have been honored for the week of Nov. 29 to Dec. 5, 2021, while St. Cloud State captured the fourth accolade. Garnering Bauer NCHC honors for week 10 are Denver senior Brett Stapley for Forward of the Week, SCSU senior Nick Perbix for Defenseman of the Week, DU junior Magnus Chrona for Goaltender of the Week and Denver forward Jack Devine for Rookie of the Week.

This is the first NCHC weekly award this season for all four honorees and the first of Devine’s career.

Forward of the Week

Brett Stapley, Denver
Senior Forward
Campbell River, B.C.

Stapley had a huge weekend to power Denver to another sweep of Arizona State, racking up six points in the series, including only his second and third multi-point games of the season. On Friday, the Montreal Canadiens draft pick recorded his first career hat trick and added the primary assist on the game-winning goal for a career-high four points. Stapley scored the game’s first goal, DU’s fourth goal and capped his hat trick with Denver’s fifth goal on the power play in a 6-2 victory. He was also +3 on Friday. The senior was back at it on Saturday with another goal and assist, tallying DU’s third goal in a 7-1 victory and again setting up the game-winner.

Stapley finished the weekend with four goals, two game-winning assists, eight shots on goal and a +4 plus/minus. He fired a season-high five shots on goal on Friday. On the season, Stapley has six goals and nine assists for 15 points in 14 games.

This is Stapley’s first career NCHC Forward of the Week honor and third career NCHC weekly honor, twice earning Rookie of the Week as a freshman in 2018-19.

Defenseman of the Week

Nick Perbix, St. Cloud State
Senior Defenseman
Elk River, Minn.

Perbix had his best weekend of the season last weekend, more than doubling his point total on the year with a six-point weekend, while leading the Huskies to a split against No. 7 North Dakota. On Friday, the Tampa Bay Lightning draft pick dished out a career-high four assists in an 8-1 thumping of UND, with the four points also a career high. It was SCSU’s first four-assist game this season and the first time a SCSU defenseman has recorded four since Jack Ahcan on Oct. 13, 2018 against Alaska Fairbanks. Perbix also blocked three shots and played on a penalty kill that went 2-for-2 Friday. The next night, Perbix set up the game’s opening goal only 17 ticks into the contest and scored the final goal, his first goal of the season, in a 5-3 defeat to UND, while firing eight shots on goal.

Perbix finished the weekend with a goal, five assists, three blocked shots, 11 shots on goal and a +2 plus/minus. He also played on a penalty kill unit that went 8-for-9 in the series. On the season, Perbix now has 11 points in 16 games with his lone goal Saturday and 10 assists.

While this is Perbix’s first NCHC award of the season, it’s his fourth career NCHC Defenseman of the Week nod, earning the honor three times last season.

GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK

Magnus Chrona, Denver
Junior Goaltender
Stockholm, Sweden

Chrona continued his strong play of late, setting a season high for saves both nights in a sweep at Arizona State, while allowing only three goals all weekend. On Friday, the San Jose Sharks prospect turned aside 31 shots in a 6-2 victory, while helping kill off all four ASU power plays. A night later, Chrona upped his game even more, totaling a season-high 34 saves in a 7-1 victory, again helping DU’s penalty kill go a perfect 3-for-3. Of his 34 saves Saturday, 16 came in the second period, the most in a period by a DU goalie this season.

With the two wins, Chrona ran his and the team’s winning streak to six games, while he has allowed two or fewer goals in five of those six games. On the weekend, Chrona finished with a .956 save percentage, totaling 65 saves on 68 shots faced, while posting a 1.50 goals-against average. He also helped DU’s penalty kill finish a perfect 7-for-7 in the series.

On the season, Chrona is now 9-3-0 with a .909 save percentage. This is Chrona’s second career Goaltender of the Week honor, earning it once last season, and his third career NCHC weekly honor (Rookie of the Week once).

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Jack Devine, Denver
Freshman Forward
Glencoe, Ill.

Devine had the best weekend of his young career, recording multiple points on back-to-back nights for the first time in a sweep at Arizona State, while doubling his season point total. On Friday, the freshman tallied his first collegiate goal, sealing a 6-2 victory late in the third period, while also handing out the primary assist on the game’s opening goal. The next night, Devine dished out two assists for his second career multi-assist game, with one helper coming on the power play.

Devine ended the series with a goal, three assists, six shots on goal (three each night) and a +3 plus/minus. He now has eight points in 12 games this season with a goal and seven assists. His only other multi-point game this year also came against Arizona State back on Dec. 9.
