2017-18 AHCA All-Americans

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Six National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) players, including four on the First Team, have been named 2017-18 CCM/AHCA All-Americans, the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) announced Friday night. Four NCHC teams are represented on the All-America squads with a trio of players from Denver, while Colorado College, Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State each placed one student-athlete on the teams.

A pair of Pioneers garnered First-Team West All-America in sophomore forward Henrik Borgström and junior forward Troy Terry, while both defensemen on the West First Team hail from the NCHC in UMD freshman Scott Perunovich and SCSU junior Jimmy Schuldt, with Perunovich the lone rookie on the West All-America teams. Garnering Second-Team West All-America was the third Pioneer in senior goaltender Tanner Jaillet, along with Colorado College sophomore forward Nick Halloran. Borgström and Jaillet are both repeat All-Americans, each earning the same respective distinction last season, as well.

Borgström (Helsinki, Finland) was the 2017-18 NCHC Player of the Year and made his NHL debut with the Florida Panthers March 29, after being drafted in the first round of the 2016 NHL Draft. The Hobey Baker Hat Trick finalist was also named NCHC Forward of the Year and First-Team All-NCHC this season, as well as All-College Hockey News First Team. Borgström led the NCHC with 52 points in 40 games this season, tying for fourth nationally in scoring, while his 1.30 points per game ranked sixth in the country. “The Artist” also led the NCHC and tied for sixth in the NCAA with his 23 goals, while chipping in 29 assists. Borgström tallied three game-winners and logged a +13 plus/minus, helping Denver win the NCHC Frozen Faceoff crown this year and earning All-Frozen Faceoff Tournament Team accolades. He recorded 14 multi-point games on the season, including a hat trick and a pair of four-point outings.

Terry (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) finished second in team scoring behind Borgström and eighth in NCAA scoring during the 2017-2018 season, logging 48 points in 39 games and leading the team with 34 assists and a +21 plus/minus. His 34 helpers ranked fourth nationally and led the NCHC, while his plus/minus was fifth in the NCAA. Now a member of the Anaheim Ducks, Terry was a Second-Team All-NCHC selection this season and earned NCAA All-Midwest Region Team honors, while potting 14 goals on the year. The U.S. Olympian posted 25 points (6g, 19a) in NCHC play and had the fifth-highest points per game average (1.14) in the conference, while helping DU win the NCHC Frozen Faceoff. Terry missed two games during the season while handing out five assists for Team USA at the 2018 Winter Olympics, and made his NHL debut with the Ducks on March 27.

Schuldt (Minnetonka, Minn.) was also a First-Team All-NCHC and All-CHN First-Team selection like Borgström, while being a finalist for NCHC Player of the Year and the Hobey Baker Award. The undrafted free agent racked up 38 points in 40 games, ranking third nationally and first in the NCHC in defenseman scoring, averaging 0.95 points per game. Schuldt scored 10 goals and handed out 28 assists, which tied for fourth in the NCAA among blue liners. The four-time NCHC Defenseman of the Week posted a +19 plus/minus, which was seventh in the NCAA among defensemen, while blocking 84 shots. The SCSU team captain earned NCHC and HCA National Player of the Month for October this season, as well, while guiding the Huskies to the Penrose Cup as NCHC regular-season champions.

Perunovich (Hibbing, Minn.), who was also named the HCA Tim Taylor Award winner as National Rookie of the Year Friday, collected NCHC Rookie of the Year, NCHC Offensive Defenseman of the Year and College Hockey News Rookie of the Year honors this season, as well. The draft-eligible defenseman was also a First-Team All-NCHC pick and a unanimous NCHC All-Rookie Team selection after leading UMD with a team-best 36 points and 25 assists in 41 games. Perunovich’s 36 points ranked fourth nationally among all defensemen, while he ranked third among all NCAA freshman skaters in scoring. Perunovich tallied 11 goals, leading all rookie blue liners nationally, while his +20 plus/minus led all NCAA freshmen this season. The rookie missed only two games on the year, which occurred while he was winning a bronze medal with the 2018 U.S. National Junior Team. He also helped lead UMD to the national championship game, which is on Saturday.

Jaillet (Red Deer, Alberta), the NCHC Goaltender of the Year and a two-time First-Team All-NCHC selection, posted a 22-9-7 record, a 1.88 goals-against average and a .928 save percentage, ranking fifth nationally in GAA and eighth in the NCAA in save percentage, leading the NCHC in both. The Mike Richter Award finalist also logged five shutouts during the 2017-2018 season, which tied for fifth in the country, starting 39 of 41 games for DU. He backstopped Denver to the 2018 NCHC Frozen Faceoff title, while earning Most Outstanding Player honors at the tournament. In NCHC play only, the undrafted free agent boasted a 12-5-5 record with a league-leading 1.91 GAA, .928 save percentage, which ranked second in the conference, and four shutouts. He finished his collegiate career with 135 games played, a school record, as well as 82 career wins and a 2.04 GAA, both of which tied a school record.

Halloran (Draper, Utah) finished third in the NCHC in scoring and ranked 14th nationally with a team-best 45 points, a 36-point improvement from a season ago, which was the largest in the country. A First-Team All-NCHC selection, the sophomore tallied 19 goals and dished out 26 assists, while playing in all 37 games for the Tigers and averaging 1.22 points per game. Four of his goals were game-winners, tying for third in the NCHC. In conference play, the undrafted free agent finished second in scoring with 31 points (13g, 18a) in 24 games, while earning back-to-back NCHC Player of the Month honors in December and January. He was also a two-time NCHC Offensive Player of the Week this season.

The six NCHC All-Americans were the second-most from once conference this year (behind eight from ECAC Hockey) and the most on the West All-America Teams, double the number of both Big Ten and WCHA honorees. Denver’s three recipients this year tied with Northeastern for the most All-Americans from one team. The NCHC has now produced 29 All-Americans in its five-year history.
