North Dakota’s Wiebe Wins February National Defenseman of the Month Honors

Junior recognized after leading all NCAA blueliners in scoring with 11 points last month

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the third time in five months, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) is home to the National Defenseman of the Month, as North Dakota junior Abram Wiebe was tabbed HCA Defenseman of the Month for February by the Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA) on Thursday. Wiebe garnered NCHC Defenseman of the Month on Tuesday and joins teammate Jake Livanavage and Denver junior Eric Pohlkamp as National Defensemen of the Month from the NCHC this season.

50044Wiebe (Mission, B.C.) was a weapon throughout February, leading all NCHC skaters and all NCAA defensemen with 11 points last month to help North Dakota to a 5-2-1 record. The Calgary Flames prospect scored two goals and dished out nine assists in February, with the nine assists three more than any other NCHC skater during the month and tied for first among NCAA blueliners. Wiebe recorded points in six of his eight games last month, including four multi-point outings, while also blocking 10 shots, which tied for third in the NCHC in February.

Wiebe was a three-time NCHC Defenseman of the Week in February, earning it each of the first three weekends of the month. He opened his February account with four assists in a series at then-No. 10 Minnesota Duluth, including a trio of helpers in a 4-1 win on Feb. 7. The following Saturday (Feb. 14), he led a UND comeback over Miami with a highlight-reel primary assist before scoring his first overtime game-winner in the 4-3 victory.

Wiebe totaled four points on Feb. 20-21 against St. Cloud State with two assists in a tie, before adding a goal and another assist in a win the next night. The assistant captain wrapped up February by helping North Dakota clinch the Penrose Cup as regular-season champions with an assist in a 5-3 win at No. 4 Western Michigan on Feb. 27.

Wiebe posted a +6 plus/minus in February and fired 14 shots on goal. He finished the regular season with 26 points in 34 games, which ranks third among NCHC blueliners in scoring. His 21 assists on the year are second among NCHC defensemen.

In addition to Wiebe being honored for February, Quinnipiac freshman Ethan Wyttenbach was tabbed HCA Men’s Forward of the Month, UMass junior Michael Hrabal garnered February Goaltender of the Month, and Penn State forward Gavin McKenna was named HCA Rookie of the Month on the men’s side. Denver freshman Johnny Hicks, the NCHC Goaltender of the Month in February, was a runner-up for both National Goalie and Rookie of the Month.

Wiebe and No. 3/2 North Dakota open NCHC Tournament play at home this weekend with a best-of-three quarterfinal series against eighth-seeded Omaha. All NCHC playoff games this season, including through the championship, can be seen on NCHC.tv.
