COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado College sophomore forward
Owen Beckner and North Dakota junior defenseman
Abram Wiebe have been named to the U.S. Collegiate Selects team that will compete in the 2025 Spengler Cup in December, it was revealed on Thursday. The NCHC duo are two of the
final seven players named to the 25-man USCS roster on Thursday, which includes six players from the National on the team.
Wiebe becomes the second North Dakota defenseman on the U.S. Collegiate Selects, along with classmate
Jake Livanavage, who was among the
‘First Five’ named to the team on Oct. 9. In addition, Wiebe and Beckner team up with Minnesota Duluth sophomores center
Zam Plante and goaltender
Adam Gajan, and Denver junior defenseman
Eric Pohlkamp, who were all announced over the past three weeks, as NCHC skaters on the USCS squad. With the addition of Beckner, four different NCHC teams will be represented at the Spengler Cup, while the six NCHC players on the team tie for the second-most from one conference, along with Hockey East.
The
2025 Spengler Cup will be the first time a select team representing college hockey has ever competed in the event. The U.S. Collegiate Selects team is comprised of active NCAA Division I players of any nationality.

Beckner (Victoria, B.C.) has started his sophomore season strong, leading the Tigers with 12 points in 10 games this season (1.20ppg), which ties for ninth in the National in scoring. His six goals tie for the team lead and sixth in the NCHC, while his six assists lead the team by himself. The Ottawa Senators draft pick also leads CC with a +8 plus/minus, while committing just one penalty this year and going 82-81 in the center circle.
As a freshman, Beckner led the Tigers with 27 points while playing in all 37 games last season. The assistant captain also tied for the team lead and for first among NCHC rookies a year ago with 20 assists, tallying the most points by a CC freshman since 1995-96. Beckner earned NCHC Rookie of the Week once last season, as well. For his college career, he has 39 points (13g/26a) in 47 games.

Wiebe (Mission, B.C.) has been a stalwart on North Dakota’s blue line since arriving in Grand Forks. This season, the Vegas Golden Knights draft pick has played in all 10 games, recording eight (8) points on two goals and six assists, tying for third among NCHC blueliners in scoring. Wiebe has committed just one penalty this season with 10 blocked shots.
Last year, Wiebe was the NCHC Player of the Month for December and a two-time Defenseman of the Week, while racking up 24 points (4g/20a) in 38 games. For his career, the UND assistant captain has 42 points (7g/35a) and is +13 in 88 contests, having never missed a game for North Dakota.
The U.S. Collegiate Selects team will be
coached by Penn State head coach Guy Gadowsky. Among the
U.S. Collegiate Selects support staff is long-time (22 years) University of Denver Hockey athletic trainer
Aaron Leu, also representing the NCHC.
The USCS team was constructed by the coaching staff and organizing committee, with guidance from select NHL scouts, and includes players representing all six conferences. The complete 25-player roster consists of 15 forwards, seven defensemen, and three goaltenders. Nine are from the Big Ten, six are from Hockey East, six are from the NCHC, two are from the CCHA and one representative each come from ECAC Hockey and Atlantic Hockey America. The complete roster is listed below.

The University of North Dakota competed in the 1982 Spengler Cup and the University of Minnesota participated in 1981.
The United States Collegiate Selects will face Team Canada to open Spengler Cup play on December 26. Along with the U.S. Selects, host HC Davos, Team Canada, HC Fribourg-Gotteron, Sparta Praha and IFK Helsinki will be taking part in the 2025 tournament. Each team will play a minimum of three contests and maximum of five during the six-day event.
