COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Along with putting in the work on the ice and in the gym, National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) players are also working hard in the classroom, as 112 student-athletes have been named to the 2023-24 NCHC Academic All-Conference Team. Included in those 112 honorees are 69 NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes.
To be eligible for the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team, a student-athlete must compile a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average or better, while having completed at least one full academic year at his current institution. Student-athletes that have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better are honored as NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes, in addition to Academic All-Conference.
Of the 69 student-athletes to earn NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete honors, 44 of them posted a cumulative GPA north of 3.7, including 16 with an impressive 3.9 GPA or better. Three (3) NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes carry a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA. Those Distinguished Scholar-Athletes with a perfect GPA through the first semester of the 2023-24 academic year include North Dakota senior Louis Jamernik V, Omaha senior Matt Miller and St. Cloud State sophomore Mason Reiners. The 69 Distinguished Scholar-Athletes are the second-most in NCHC history, trailing only the 73 in 2021-22.
Colorado College once again leads NCHC teams with 13 Distinguished Scholar-Athletes this year, while Omaha and Western Michigan are each home to 10 Distinguished Scholar-Athletes. Denver and Minnesota Duluth boast eight (8) Distinguished Scholar-Athletes each, while all eight NCHC teams have at least six (6) Distinguished Scholar-Athletes this year.
Among the 112 Academic All-Conference honorees, seven schools placed at least 12 student-athletes on the team, led by 18 each from Colorado College and Omaha. Western Michigan is third with 16 Academic All-Conference recipients, while Denver has 15 representatives on the team. Minnesota Duluth is home to 13 Academic All-Conference Team members, while Miami and North Dakota had 12 each earn the distinction.
Three (3) NCHC student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference honors for the fifth time in their career this year: Miami captain and defenseman Jack Clement, North Dakota assistant captain and forward Carson Albrecht, and Omaha captain and forward Nolan Sullivan. Sullivan is the lone one of the trio to be a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete all five years, as well.
Seven (7) members of the Academic All-Conference Team have already graduated with a bachelor’s degree and are currently in graduate school, including Clement, Albrecht and Sullivan. Three of those seven were also Distinguished Scholar-Athletes this year, including Miami’s Logan Neaton, Omaha’s Jack Randl and Sullivan.
While freshmen and first-year transfers, including graduate transfers, are not currently eligible for the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team or Distinguished Scholar-Athlete recognition (due to not having a full year at their current school), those freshmen and transfers that achieve a cumulative 3.0 GPA or better at the conclusion of the 2023-24 academic year will be added to the Academic All-Conference Team over the summer. Similarly, any freshmen or first-year transfers who compile a 3.5 GPA or better will be named an NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete.
The 2023-24 NCHC Senior Scholar-Athlete Award, chosen from senior Distinguished Scholar-Athletes, will be announced at the annual NCHC Awards Celebration, which will be held at the St. Paul Event Center on Thursday, March 21 in Saint Paul, Minn. NCHC All-Conference and All-Rookie Teams, along with NCHC individual award finalists, will be announced the week prior from March 12-14.
All 112 members of the 2023-24 NCHC Academic All-Conference Team are listed below by school, with those also earning NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete recognition in
