Denver’s Chrona Tabbed 2023 Mike Richter Award Semifinalist

DU senior one of only nine up for the honor of top goaltender in men’s college hockey

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Denver senior netminder Magnus Chrona has been named one of only nine semifinalists for the 2023 Mike Richter Award, presented annually to the top goaltender in NCAA Division I men’s hockey since 2014. The Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA) announced the nine semifinalists on Wednesday, with Chrona the lone goaltender from the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) among the semifinalists.

46799Chrona (Stockholm, Sweden) has started 26 of Denver’s 30 games this season, posting a 19-7-0 record in net, with the 19 wins tops in the NCHC and third nationally. The San Jose Sharks prospect has recorded a .916 save percentage on the year, his best since his rookie campaign, and has a 2.14 goals-against average, which is 15th nationally and fourth in the NCHC. Chrona’s four clean sheets on the season are tied for fourth in the NCAA and lead all NCHC netminders.

Chrona has twice been named NCHC Goaltender of the Week this season and six times in his career. He backstopped the Pioneers to the Penrose Cup and the NCAA National Championship last season, while earning Honorable Mention All-NCHC. For his career, Chrona has played in 108 games at DU, compiling a 70-32-5 record in net. He has a .914 career save percentage and a 2.19 GAA with 13 career shutouts. His 70 wins rank fourth in NCHC history, while his 13 whitewashes are second all-time in the NCHC.

The nine Richter Award semifinalists were chosen by a panel of voters consisting of coaches, former players and media from a Watch List of 41 goaltenders first revealed in January. Among the nine semifinalists, three each hail from Canada and the United States, while two are Swedish, including Chrona, and one is a native of the Czech Republic. Chrona is one of five seniors among the nine semifinalists. By conference, three play in the Big Ten, two each in ECAC Hockey and Hockey East, and one each in the NCHC and CCHA.

Three finalists for the Richter Award will be announced in early March with the winner of this year’s Mike Richter Award announced on Friday, April 7 during the NCAA Men’s Frozen Four in Tampa, Fla.

The NCHC is home to two previous Mike Richter Award winners, with North Dakota’s Zane McIntyre winning the second annual Richter Award in 2015 and Denver’s Tanner Jaillet claiming the honor in 2017.
