NCHC Unveils Documentary Chronicling Conference’s First Decade

‘Rise of the NCHC’ will air in four episodes, with Episode One released Tuesday night

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – With the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) in the midst of its 10th season of competition, the Conference is celebrating its first decade in college hockey. On Tuesday night, the NCHC released the first episode in its four-part documentary ‘The Rise of the NCHC: A Decade in College Hockey.’

The documentary details the Conference’s founding in 2011 all the way through Denver’s 2022 NCAA National Championship, which was the NCHC’s fifth NCAA title in eight tournaments since play began. Along the way, ‘The Rise of the NCHC’ discusses membership, the Conference staff and office location, the Penrose Cup, the Frozen Faceoff, the NCHC Pod, some of the NCHC’s most memorable games, and of course, many of the Conference’s successes on and off the ice.

New episodes will air every two weeks and will be available on NCHC.tv, the NCHC’s YouTube channel, as well as the NCHC’s Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts. Episode One, titled ‘New Beginnings,’ can be seen here, while Episode Two (‘Dropping the Puck’) will debut on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Episodes Three and Four will be unveiled on Tuesday, Feb. 14 and Tuesday, Feb. 28, respectively.

Hear from current and former Athletic Directors and NCHC Commissioners, as well as current head coaches, former players and media members as they go behind the scenes and explain what led to the rise of the NCHC. Among the voices in the documentary are former NCHC Commissioner Josh Fenton, current NCHC Commissioner Heather Weems, former Colorado College Athletic Director Ken Ralph, Omaha Associate AD Mike Kemp, and head coaches Brad Berry of North Dakota and Scott Sandelin of Minnesota Duluth. In addition, former Denver captain, national champion and 2017 Hobey Baker Award winner Will Butcher and former Minnesota Duluth captain and national champion Noah Cates are featured, as well as analyst Dave Starman of CBS Sports Network and beat writer Brad Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald.

Along with interviews from many familiar faces, the documentary is narrated by long-time voice of the NCHC Ben Holden.

Along with the documentary, the NCHC will also be naming All-Decade Teams as part of its 10-year anniversary celebration. A fan vote will begin on NCHChockey.com tomorrow night, Wednesday, Jan. 18, and run for approximately two weeks, which will allow fans to select their favorite former NCHC standouts.
