WMU's Kovacs Wins NCHC Goals of the Year Tournament

Bronco senior tallied NCHC Goal of the Year at Denver in week 5 of season

With the 2015 NCHC Frozen Faceoff complete and all the votes tallied, the winner of the NCHC Goals of the Year Tournament, presented by TRIA Orthopaedics, is Western Michigan senior forward Justin Kovacs. Kovacs was the top seed in the tournament and defeated No. 2 seed Drake Caggiula of North Dakota, the defending champion, in the championship match-up, receiving 64 percent of the fan vote. Kovacs' winning goal was shown during the Frozen Faceoff Championship Game Saturday night at Target Center.

Kovacs' NCHC Goal of the Year came on Friday, Nov. 7 at Denver in week five with a nifty move between his legs to beat a DU defenseman, while he goes short-side to beat Denver's goalie. It was Kovacs' first goal of the season while he recently signed with the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL following his Bronco career.

Kovacs defeated UMD's Alex Iafallo, Miami's Alex Wideman, UND's Nick Schmaltz and Caggiula on his way to the NCHC Goal of the Year title. Michael Rebry and Neal Goff earned assists on the goal.

Video of Kovacs' Goal of the Year is below. The entire Goals of the Year bracket can also be seen below, while all 16 goals in the tournament can be seen here.
